Art Monastery Project
The Art Monastery Project is by far the largest-scale work I have endeavored to create. I co-founded the project in 2007 as a non-profit organization located in Italy, an experiment in social sculpture based on the three pillars of creativity, community, and contemplation. We asked ourselves the question: what happens when you take contemporary emerging artists and put them in an astoundingly beautiful place that has been cultivated and cared for in contemplative intentionality? What happens when you apply monastic principles to art making? We lived as an art-monastic community, as Artmonks. We developed and then took Artmonk Vows (Gratitude, Resourcefulness, Fidelity). We created work from scratch. We lived and ate and cleaned and laughed and cried together. It was everything. It was art as life.
The Art Monastery is always functioning on two levels: the art that the community produces and the community itself as a social sculpture.
